It is often cited that a coat is the most important sartorial purchase of winter but this season the fashionable way to wrap up warm involves a whole wardrobe of key looks. Cable Knit sweaters (see Dior and Prada), handsome tailoring (at Dries van Noten and Bottega Veneta) and fur accessories (everywhere, most notably at Lanvin) were the catwalk trends. Rather than cosy, the mood is sexy, cool and comfortable. References from the 50s and 60s abound but in modern reinterpretations as opposed to authentic homages. It’s a casual aesthetic that can even be found on cocktail dresses, which came attached to cashmere knits at Giambattista Valli. As always, accessories are essential: Jean Paul Gaultier’s sheepskin tote and Marni’s trimmed fur bag complete the winter look.
