Architect: Schmidhuber + Partners

What: The name of the German pavilion by Munich-based Schmidhuber + Partners is Balancity, which represents a “city in balance between renewal and preservation, innovation and tradition, urbanity and nature, society and its individuals, work and recreation, and finally, between globalisation and national identity”. Germany wanted to highlight the fact that diversity and balance are vital to not only its cities, but also the contemporary city in general.

As such, Schmidhuber + Partners responded to this brief with a pavilion that comprises of four sculptural structures that on their own are precariously balanced. Interacting with each other as a whole pavilion, a stable balance is found. The architects sum up their design as “very much like a dynamic, urban organism, an accessible three-dimensional sculpture, mirroring the diversity of life in the city and the country in Germany.”
