What: A set of Polynesian-style thatched-roof, tropical-island retreats set directly over a blue lagoon.

Where: On Point Raititi, at the edge of Bora Bora's lagoon.

Why: Though Gaughin's Tahiti hasn't existed for a hundred years, a touch of the legend can be lived in peace and luxury at the Bora Bora Hotel. Its 54 air-conditioned bungalows, many of them perched directly over the water, have views of the ocean, the reef, and the haunting, cloud-wreathed Mt Otemanu. Connected by walkways to the public areas, they are made like the traditional old trader's houses in rattan, bamboo and wood.
