Lion Sands Ivory Lodge

What: A modern hotel composed of a collection of six magnificent villas overlooking the Sabi river.

Where: West of the Kruger National Park within the Sabi Sand reserve on 8,700 acres of game country in South Africa.

Why: Opened in 2004, Lion Sands isn’t the usual safari adventure hotel one is used to seeing. Thoroughly modern in their design, the guest houses are impossibly chic. Neutral colors of browns and creams beautifully offset the rustic charm of the wilderness outside. Each room comes with its own infinity pool, from which guests can witness the goings-on of the natural ecosystem adjacent. Buffalo and elephants, to name just two animals, and a quantity of birds impressive enough to make any ornithologist’s year all are visible from the rooms by using the telescopes provided. Game-viewing drives take place at dawn and dusk and last about two hours, with the capacity to hold six people at any one time.
