Vigilius Mountain Resort

What: A place of respite that couldn’t be more inaccessible if it tried. With only cable cars granting access, the Vigilius Mountain resort is in a league of its own.

Where: Five thousand feet above sea level in the South Tyrol region in the Italian Alps.

Why: No noise, no pollution and no distractions: these are the three key factors one must prepare for when visiting the Vigilius Mountain Resort and its Mountain Spa. Designed by Matteo Thun with a stricture that the hotel limit its intrusion on the surrounding landscape to the minimum possible, it’s through simple yet extraordinary horizontal beams of wood that guests have unrivalled panoramic vistas of the Texelgruppe, the Burggrafenamt, the Salten, and the Dolomite mountain ranges. Minimalism is a central theme that pervades the interiors as well, with lots of open spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows from which to contemplate the serenity spread out on the other side of the pane. With spring water treatments in the adjoining spa and a range of cuisines to sample in the various on-site eateries, it’s going to be hard to make the descent back to the real world after being up in the clouds for so long.
